Summary: “If you ever come back to us, will you remember?”

He comes to her, always with the sunset as if called by it.

She wondered why to begin with, but thought that perhaps the very act of her questioning his presence would break the spell and she would be left with cold reality and a Daniel-less world.

Right after Jack had been taken and tortured by Ba’al, Daniel doesn’t visit for three weeks and she begins to worry, not really liking how reliant she has become on his gentle presence in the darkness, chasing her nightmares away with tender hands and whispered words.

Beautiful, he says.

Wondrous, he says.

My Sam, he says.

That last makes her breath hitch and her whole body sing. She feels wanton and possessed and never wants to let go of the feeling. Jack and Teal’c both start to look at her with worried eyes and she feels guilty for pulling away from them, but she is like leaves turned towards the sunlight and whenever she is away from Daniel, she curls in on herself, protected and closed.

“Will you remember?” she asks and Daniel’s eyes follow hers as she flushes and ducks her head. “If you ever come back to us, will you remember?”

“How could I forget?” he sighs, as if it is ludicrous and these words will come back to sting her, eat away at her when she lies alone in her bed in a world that has him living and breathing…

And forgetting.

<8>

He looks at her sometimes, like maybe he knows but doesn’t want to ask, that first year back.

She knows she had a chance to tell him everything, but that time has now passed.

Samantha Carter?

Yeah?

Was there ever anything… between us?

Summary: “We know old war horses like you can’t sit around wait to die. You need a purpose.”

“I’m retired,” he growls, glaring at the slick man in the slick uniform and just thinking get out get out GET OUT.

The man merely smiles.

Slick smile too.

“We know old war horses like you can’t sit around wait to die. You need a purpose.”

Jack’s scowl deepens as he scrunches further down in his recliner, grasping his beer so tightly that it’s a miracle it doesn’t shatter in his fingers.

“Your country needs you,” he says, his voice a carefully measured patina of respect and admiration that Jack knows is completely false.

This man thinks he’s an ass.

“Don’t give me that horseshit,” Jack growls, wishing desperately for his gun but he can’t remember where he put it the last time someone came knocking. That should bother him that he can’t recall that vital piece of information but weirdly, it doesn’t. He’ll find it eventually. He’s not on a timetable anymore.

Things can happen… organically now.

“We know with your original team gone that you didn’t see the point anymore but you can still be useful.” The man’s carefully maintained mask slips a little as exasperation creeps into his tone. He sees what he’s doing as a chore.

Jack could be anybody.

“Don’t…” Jack whispers, his voice a low warning.

“I mean, I know Major Carter and Doctor Jackson were-“

Jack is up, quicker than he thought possible and faster than this man had been expecting. He’s up and across the room and is holding the slick man against the wall, forearm pressed into his throat and he doesn’t look so slick now, hair mussed and breathing ragged.

“Don’t you dare say their names. You don’t get to say their names. You don’t deserve to.”

The man’s eyes are wide as he is dropped unceremoniously back to the floor. Jack slumps back in his chair but the air of dismissal this man had is gone and he is now regarding Jack with a careful wariness.

“Look, I’m just supposed to come and make you the offer. Let you know you’re needed in the war.”

Jack chuckles, a hollow sound in the emptiness of his home.

“The War is over kid,” he sighs.

Summary: Is this how it ends, Kara?

This is how it ends?

She stands by the window, looking out, one hand pressed to the glass and asks the question that has been burning like lightning through her veins.

This is how it ends?

People like Kara Thrace are supposed to go out in a blaze of glory, burning with the same intensity as the ships around them, liquid fire, joined with metal.

Instead she stands in an airlock with a Cylon outside, looking in.

She’s not sure, but she thinks she sees pity in its eyes and somehow, that’s worse.

This is how it ends?

She wants to scream but at the same time she doesn’t want to give the smug bastard the pleasure. She reaches out bloodied fingers but for some reason the intercom’s gone and that doesn’t make sense.

This is how it ends?

She wants to ask it why.

Why did you come?

What do you want?

Weren’t we happier on opposite sides of the galaxy?

She supposes as they grew in number, they also grew in fear.

Look at the human race after all. A supposedly peaceful people, united and happy and yet with great hulking Battlestars, prepped for a war never expected and unforseen.

Relics.

This is how it ends?

She breathes in deep, knowing it’s futile as explosive decompression will wrench the air from her lungs.

Kara?

If she curls in on herself and breathes out, she can stave off death for a few seconds. One last battle.

Is this how it ends, Kara?

She blinks awake, not really remembering where she is but her mind points out the fact that in that airlock, she was on the other side of the glass, waiting to see death instead of experience it.

“Kara, is this how it ends?”

She looks across and sees Lee, his brow furrowed, staring at the vid they were watching. Kara rubs her eyes and tries to focus, tries to reconcile the fact that the question was outside her head.

“Is it?” Lee is looking disappointed and tired and he slumps further in the chair. She remembers this movie and why she liked it It mirrored real life, no happy sunset, the hero didn’t survive.

“Yes Lee, this is how it always ends,” she sighs.
