Cleaning out my harddrive and found this piece that I don't think ever the light of day...

Title: Elementariness
By: kellifer_fic
Written: S1-7ish
Rated: PG
Is: Jack/Daniel snapshots of a life together (friendship, pre-ship... if you squint)

Summary: “Do you ever get the feeling that you’re… ruined?” Daniel had his journals spread out on his desk and a very bored Colonel pacing his office like a caged tiger. Jack stopped mid stride and rounded on Daniel.

Many Sins…

“Out damn spot, huh?”

The voice behind him made Jack stiffen. He was scrubbing his hands over the sink in the locker room and the water had foamed pink from the blood under his nails and spattered up his forearms.

Not his blood.

“Are we going to have a problem?” he snapped, feeling an unnatural stillness pass over him. He looked over his shoulder and regarded the thin, long haired and bespectacled figure watching him carefully. He had only known Daniel Jackson a short time and it worried him how much Daniel’s opinion mattered.

He had lived his life quite well without worrying what anyone thought of him and was loathe to change, but there it was.

The boy’s opinion… mattered.

Daniel blinked and then held up his own hands in placation. “Too early for me to try the black humour, huh?” he guessed, looking embarrassed.

Jack merely smiled, his worry draining and leaving him feeling weary.

“Give it six months.”

I’ve done today…

"I can't believe you can sleep in that thing."

Janet's voice prodded Jack back to the waking world as surely as if she'd physically poked him. She was studying him carefully, noting with a compassionate eye how his long frame was folded so precariously into the worn plastic infirmary chair. She looked across the bed and could see the top of Sam's head, her face hidden by the arm she was resting on.

"I can sleep anywhere, as long as..." Jack trailed off, scrubbing a hand through his hair. The same hand drifted down to touch Daniel's pale face, a finger straying to the dark smudges under the eyes.

"What?" Janet prompted. She knew it was unfair to press as Jack's defences were mostly sleep addled. She couldn't pass up an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the rarely seen inner Jack, however. Janet heard footsteps behind her and looked around to see Teal'c. In large hands he held four steaming cups of coffee.

"As long as I know where all of them are." Jack breathed.

Please Lord…

"I don't do begging."

Jack felt the end of the staff weapon nudge the base of his neck. He had always figured he would go out violently, but was frankly disappointed that it was a no-name Jaffa that got the drop on him.

A single gun shot echoed and he felt more than heard the Jaffa fall away behind him. Jack turned, expecting to see Sam with her P-90 and a grin.

It was Daniel, standing with his legs apart and the gun now held low and slightly away from his body. He canted his head, a mirror of Teal'c.

Jack returned the slight nod, wondering why he felt more disappointed than relieved.

Oh yeah, he thought wryly, in a better world Daniel doesn't have to shoot anybody in the back.

Take them all away…

“Drop him,” Jack said, low and deadly.

“Don’t make me repeat myself,” Jack snarled.

He watched as Major Casen looked from Daniel, who he was holding close with a fist full of shirt, back to Jack, perhaps weighing his options. His arm was still slung backwards, elbow up and fist clenched. Jack marvelled at the man’s control that he had been able to stop himself mid-punch.

Jack raised his P-90 and thumbed the safety off.

Casen shook Daniel once and Jack almost shot him. The shake seemed to wake Daniel from the glassy shock he had been staring at Jack with.

“Jesus Jack!” Daniel exclaimed. “Casen was just showing me how to get out of some holds.” Casen, looking pale, finally realised that his best course of action would be to release Daniel and he let his hands unclench and Daniel stumbled backwards. Casen held up two hands in surrender and backed off, scowling.

“Oh…uh… sorry,” Jack called lamely. Daniel’s scowl equalled Casen’s.

“You still see the skinny geek when you look at me, don’t you?” he snapped, straightening his jacket with an annoyed yank.

“Daniel. You’re not exactly…” Jack could see Daniel’s scowl deepen and thought it prudent to not finish the sentence.

“I’ve outweighed you for probably two years now,” Daniel snapped.

Jack blinked at him. “That doesn’t…I mean I’ll always feel like… ah crap.” Jack scrubbed a hand over his face, knowing the hole he was digging could only get deeper. Daniel stalked away, muttering something that Jack was sure was unpleasant.

Teal’c was beside him as Daniel strode away. “You must make your protectiveness of DanielJackson more subtle, O’Neill. Otherwise he feels devalued as a fellow warrior.”

Jack looked at him. “You got a knack for stating the obvious, T,” Jack sighed. “Long winded, but obvious.”

Look upon me…

The constant rumble of bickering was driving a wedge of pain into his skull.

"Will you two cut it out!" Jack yelled. Daniel and Sam both started guiltily.

"Sorry Sir." Sam apologised immediately.

Jack nodded, turning to Daniel expectantly. Daniel just blinked back at him.

"Something to say?" Jack prompted.

"Actually, yes," Daniel nodded. He then turned to Sam and started up his tirade, exactly where he had left off. Jack could see Sam trying to resist the urge to butt in and resume her side of the argument, an internal war where one half of her wanted to obey an order from a superior and the other half desperately wanting to bicker with Daniel.

Thirty seconds later, the battle was lost and it was like Jack had never interrupted them.

"I have learned from DanielJackson that to repeat the same behaviour and expect a different result is to be insane." Teal'c's mild voice broke through Jack's anger.

"Yep, T, those two are definitely nutso."

"I was alluding to the fact that you are the one who is... nutso," Teal'c said, a small smile curving his lip upward.

Jack turned back, ready with an indignant denial, but then shrugged.

"Try something different you mean?"

Teal'c inclined his head in agreement.

Daniel and Sam were crouched over a low stone wall, both intent on the carvings and debating rather heatedly as to whether their meaning was an archaic script or some kind of code. They didn't see Jack approach, two canteens full of water in hand.

"Much better." Jack remarked, walking away from two very soaked and very silent team members.

In Thy Grace…

Jack nearly bowled Sam over, who was standing in the doorway. He dropped his chin onto her shoulder, following the path of her gaze.

"Destroys me to see them like that," he sighed. There were people milling about the room, quietly making small talk and nibbling finger food. He thought Janet Frasier would have loathed the sombre turn out at her wake.

Seemingly detached from it all on a couch in the middle of the room was Daniel and Cassie.

Cassie had her head on Daniel's shoulder and her legs curled underneath her. Daniel had his fingers lightly circling her wrist.

"Really? It makes me feel better," Sam said looking sideways and Jack frowned at her.

"They both look so destroyed," Jack observed, wondering what positive Sam could find in the little tableaux before them.

"I know, but they look like family," She smiled.

Make me pure…

Two cracked ribs, probably concussion and definitely something nasty going on with the wrist.

Jack mentally catalogued his latest injuries, walking his hands carefully over his body to assess the damage. He could feel the gentle warmth of Teal’c by his side and was grateful. He figured he would probably slide sideways if not for the reassuring bulk propping him up against the wall. Faintly he could hear Sam’s voice and tried to tune into his surroundings to puzzle out what she was saying.

“…fine… only a matter… no…. it’s nothing… I’m sure…. of course, but don’t talk that way.” Jack cracked upon an eye and could see her on the other side of the cell from him, a prone figure lying with their head in her lap. She was stroking the hair back from the face and he realised it must have been Daniel.

They had taken Daniel first. Jack had been taken second as they were dumping Daniel back into the cell but he knew he’d only gotten a cursory beating, more perfunctory than anything else.

They always took Daniel first.

Sam seemed to sense she was being watched and looked up, her face grey in the wan light.

Jack felt anger blossom in his belly.

They always took Daniel first.

No more, Jack thought. If this ever happens again, I will die before I left them take Daniel first.

Before Thy Face…

“Do you ever get the feeling that you’re… ruined?” Daniel had his journals spread out on his desk and a very bored Colonel pacing his office like a caged tiger. Jack stopped mid stride and rounded on Daniel.

“I could probably tell you if I knew what you were talking about,” Jack said, dropping his elbows onto the desk and managing to push a few of the books on the already overcrowded surface off the edge.

“Forget it,” Daniel sighed, shaking his head and disappearing behind the table to rescue the books off the floor.

“You can’t say something like that and then dismiss it.” Daniel had raised an arm and placed a book back on the desk. Jack watched it slide off again until it hit Daniel in the head with a thump. “Watch out,” he warned belatedly.

Daniel appeared again, rubbing his head and holding the errant book in his other hand. “Major Aimes asked me if I was dating anyone today.”

“Aimes? Aimes…” Jack chanted, trying to dredge a face up with the name. He carded through his mind’s catalogue until he finally came up with what he thought was a match. “Little, black hair, green eyes?” Daniel nodded and Jack grinned. “Very cute.”

“I should think so, right?”

“You don’t?”

“I do… I guess. I just…” Daniel looked lost and Jack’s heart hurt to see him that way.

“Daniel, you’ve been through more than your fair share of bad stuff. It’s natural to be wary. You’re not ruined.” Daniel was looking more hopeful and Jack smiled.

“You’re just a little dented.”

oOooo.. What fun. I think this piece is my favoritest:

“You still see the skinny geek when you look at me, don’t you?” he snapped, straightening his jacket with an annoyed yank.

“Daniel. You’re not exactly…” Jack could see Daniel’s scowl deepen and thought it prudent to not finish the sentence.

“I’ve outweighed you for probably two years now,” Daniel snapped.

I often reflect on lanky Daniel v. buff Daniel. Whenever I watch oldskool SG1 I think about how intimidating Daniel looks now that he's put on the weight and how not only physically he's changed so much, but psychologically and emotionally.

so. that bit? very spiff.

That is so Jack. Perfectly. And you write the characters so very well! *loves more*

I love Daniel and Jack friendship pieces the most.

The best line at the end. Even if he's a little dented, Jack and company can still help him bang out the dents.

I love all of these. They are such true and beautiful pictures of Jack's love for Daniel and his team. But I especially love Look Upon Me, and the way Daniel and Sam are caught up in their intellectual argument. Sam is obliged to obey Jack and Daniel never even tries, never has. It's so them!

Yup. And I think deep down Jack is glad there's someone in his life who does that -- someone who doesn't "yessir" him. Jack needs to butt headds sometimes, without rank getting in the way.

This was a lot of fun to read. : ) Moments plucked out, here and there, painting a great picture of an outstanding friendship. Lots of good character "voice", lots of great plausibility - though I think my heart broke a bit when Jack told Janet he could sleep anywhere as long as he knew where they all were. Sniffy sigh! : }

Reading these was like downing a row of shots, or getting punched; perfect points smacked squarely on the head.

Stunning; loved them.

Couldn't pick a favourite but Jack dousing them in water and Jack threatening poor Casen were brilliant.

You've got some wonderful insights into them.

And this line broke me, just a little:

They always took Daniel first.

Because it's true, and the implications of that are heartbreaking, really.

I love how Jack's protectiveness of Daniel goes from interest into concern into over-protective but not really seeing him, into a nice, deep partnership.

And I love that you ended it with this for that reason: Daniel had raised an arm and placed a book back on the desk. Jack watched it slide off again until it hit Daniel in the head with a thump. “Watch out,” he warned belatedly.

Lovely job. Loved the progression. Someone needs to hit Jack and make him realise his undying love for Daniel before Daniel starts dating that Aimes character.

Just wonderful! I can't point out all the good lines because the whole story was just perfect in content, moment, and best of all in characterization.

Reccing this over on Stargate Legends because it just needs to be shared :)

Here via sg_fignewton's rec

Oh this is fantastic! A superb example of after years in the fandom, I'm still finding hidden gems I've never read. I love the different emotions you explore. From the humorous water over Sam's and Daniel's heads to the angsty and gut-wrenching Daniel having to shoot a sentient being in the back in cold-blood to save a friend. You took my emotions and heart on a roller coaster ride that I enjoyed like nuts!

Thanks for sharing this. You made me smile and tear up.
